In their chapter, “Critical Elements for Literacy Instruction of Teacher Candidates for Urban Settings, ” Susan Lenski, Carol Mack, and Julie Esparza Brown review the pertinent research on urban literacy practices and present a set of significant recommendations for practice, policy, and further research on teacher preparation programs that target successful practices in urban settings. The primary purpose of their chapter is to describe the elements in literacy teacher preparation that are essential for the literacy learning of students in urban settings. The authors point out that while there is a considerable research base on the teaching of reading and a growing research corpus on teacher preparation, we know little about how best to prepare literacy teachers.
