This chapter explores orthographic development across languages and literacies, the use of spelling to assess development, and the nature and specifics of supporting English language learners across the developmental continuum as they study words in English. The authors also share ways in which word story—the exploration of orthography—can take into account the languages and literacies students know and are learning.
