This chapter focuses on the authors' collaborative research on literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment in a third-grade classroom. The authors describe the work the teacher and her students did to build meaningful connections across the literature they studied, their personal and critical responses to that literature, and their study of those texts as cultural artifacts. The chapter ends with recommendations for helping teachers and students become engaged participants in exploring their own and others' storied lives.
