full text - PDF

Chapter 1 gives an overview of the critical pieces of good literacy instruction – standards, curriculum design, and curriculum delivery – then details the important role each piece plays in planning, delivering, and assessing literacy learning. Other pieces of the literacy jigsaw puzzle include assessment that informs instruction, differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of individual students, and empowering teachers to make day-to-day decisions based on research-based best practices that directly affect the literacy development of their students. Although each piece is introduced and briefly discussed in this chapter, the detailed discussion of the planning and implementation of these pieces in the classroom is addressed in the later chapters of this book.
