In a holistic, integrated langauge arts learning environment, learners are actively engaged in learning to read, learning through reading, and learning about reading. They act as constructors of knowledge as they think critically and speculatively, monitor their understanding, and negotiate meaning through social interaction. This chapter describes the theoretical underpinnings of this approach to literacy instruction, outlines contrasting views, and suggests that researchers make clear their ideological positions in order to advance discussion and debate.
