From the President
And the Executive Director of IRA
Concerning All Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Dear IRA Members,

One week has passed since Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc and destruction on the northeast. Many of our members have been affected by this storm, particularly those near the coast in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area where homes have been lost, schools flooded, and lives forever changed. The effect of this devastation is hard to imagine. Graphic images and stories of loss lead every news show, but it is still difficult for all of us to comprehend.

On behalf of the International Reading Association Board of Directors, staff and members, our hearts go out to all of you during this difficult time of recovery, rebuilding and restoration. We would all like to help - it's the one thing we feel we can and should do -  but it is hard for those of us who were not directly affected by the storm to know what kind of help matters most.

So we extend our personal message of caring and support to all of you affected by Hurricane Sandy and we encourage our members who want to help directly to consider a donation to The American Red Cross or The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

Other good suggestions on how to help can be found in the following article: How to help after the superstorm.

As the days go by, the waters recede and the process of recovery moves forward, we will continue to keep the victims of Hurricane Sandy in our thoughts and prayers.
