Celebrate National Day on Writing

The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved a resolution establishing October 20, 2009, as the National Day on Writing, reports Kent Williamson, executive director of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), sponsor of the event. For further information, view the full text of the resolution.

Many celebrations have been planned for October 20. To draw attention to those activities, a full-day webcast will occur from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time from studios at the New York Institute of Technology. Here is the URL for the webcast.

To date, more than 1,200 communities and schools have formed galleries to showcase pieces of writing, and more than 5,000 pieces have been submitted for publication. The International Reading Association is one of 18 national partners for the event. To learn more, visit the National Day on Writing website.

IRA's gallery, which focuses on "Writing about Reading," invites people to tell about a book, story, or poem that has made a difference in their lives. To contribute, visit the IRA gallery.
